Chapter 44

The following day Sam got up well before sunrise. He was sipping a cup of coffee while Irving was getting ready for work at Fannie’s bakery.

“I wrote to your sister,” Irving called out to Sam from his bedroom. “I told her that we are both coming in the spring. I checked for sailings, and the first one we can get is on May first. I hope your boss said you could go.”

“Yes, he was real good about it,” Sam answered. He was a little cranky because he’d been unable to sleep. All night he was thinking about Chana.

“Your grandfather will send money for our passage.”

“I don’t need his money. Book passage on a ship for both of us. I’ll give you the money.”

“First, you have to talk to Chana and ask her to speak with Fannie about my taking off from work at the bakery. With jobs being so hard to come by, I don’t want to lose my job, Sam.”

“Yeah, all right. I’ll do that today,” Sam said. Well, at least that gives me another reason to go and see Chana. I’ve been anxious about going back there. I’m afraid of what she’ll say. If she turns down my proposal, what can I do? I can’t bear to think of living without her. I know she’ll talk to Fannie to help my dad. She has the biggest heart of anyone I know. How did I ever mess this up? She loved me. She would have married me in a minute. But I hurt her. I am a real idiot. I had the whole world right in the palm of my hand, money, a job, a nice place to live, and the girl of every man’s dreams. And look what I did? I feel so damn stupid, and to make things worse, I feel so vulnerable.
